Controlled drugs must be rendered unrecoverable before onward safe disposal. The destruction of controlled drugs should be carried out in accordance with the relevant legislation and your organisation’s own procedures.
Relevant requirements include:
- Misuse of Drugs Regulations 2001
- Controlled Drugs (Supervision of Management & Use) Regulations 2006
- Health Act 2006
- Applicable regulations across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland
Where required, the destruction of controlled drugs must also be witnessed by an appropriately authorised person.
Simple and Effective to Use
Instructions are printed on every PolyGuard kit to make the process as straightforward as possible.
- Remove solid-dose medicines from blister packaging — tablets do not need to be crushed.
- Suitable liquid medicines can be added directly to the kit.
- Liquid ampoules can be opened and added to the kit.
- Powder ampoules should be dissolved in a small amount of water before being added.
- Fentanyl patches should have the backing removed and be folded before disposal.
Once water is added, the contents are mixed and form a semi-solid gel in approximately 30 seconds, rendering the controlled drugs unrecoverable.
PolyGuard Controlled Drug Destruction Kits
Unlike products that simply encapsulate controlled drugs, the patented PolyGuard system is designed to break down their active constituents.
After approximately 48 hours, the active drug constituents have been significantly broken down.
PolyGuard has been independently tested by the University of Hertfordshire, with testing finding that it destroyed over upto 98% of the controlled drugs tested. The test report is available upon request.
